Sonya’s Blog - Day 299 - April 16th - The Harrowing Drive

Well, another long drive. This time we are heading to the Sierra Meadows area, a place near Yosemite National Park. I took the first part of the drive, which ended up being the better part of the drive. I drove for about 3 hours and Blake took over when we stopped to get gas. Well, we were only on good highway for a bit more and then we turned off onto the Yosemite Parkway. This is where the drive got pretty exciting. The road is not super wide and has no shoulder to speak off. You learn to love shoulders when you are pulling a huge rig, so it is very disconcerting not to have them. That first part ended up being the best part of what was yet to come! The road started to go up, and down, was super windy with some pretty nice hair-pin turns in the road. Our favourite part was when we were descending into the town of Mariposa and there was a super sharp turn in the road, with no guardrail between us and dropping off the mountain side. They did put up some markers with reflective stickers on them! That was sweet of them.

After Mariposa, we still had a good half hour of driving ahead of us, up to the town of Ahwahnee. We finally made it, but it wasn’t our favourite drive. I am dreading the drive out in 5 days, we will need to get an early start!

The RV Park I reserved is paired with a Golf Course. We had to go to the clubhouse to register for our camping stay. As it turns out, the golf course is no longer operational. They only had 20 members, so they had to shut it in. Not sure how long it was open for, but wow, what a waste of money. It has a nice clubhouse and paved paths around it, for golf carts. Crazy. Well, we are allowed to walk our dog along the pathway and through the golf course, so that is a bonus.

This is our campsite, once we were all set up and below is a view of the clubhouse from the abandoned golf course:

They told us to just pick our own site, which is never ideal. We don’t know the campground and it is a bit of a hassle to drive around and look at sites. We chose a back-in one, because it looked really long. Once we got in there, however, it wasn’t going to work as we wouldn’t be able to open our outdoor kitchen as there was a large tree in the way. We picked another spot, which was a pull-thru and it was pretty exciting trying to get our RV turned the right way, so that we could pull-thru. The roads are not quite wide enough to make the turns properly. We finally got in, but it took forever to set up. Just wasn’t going our way. An hour later, we were finally set up and ready to start on supper. Luckily we had bought some perogies, so we cooked those up with some broccoli and called it good. Not the greatest supper, but we were beyond caring at that point.
