Sonya’s Blog - Day 251 - February 28th - Petroglyph National Monument
Today was a hiking day. I wanted to check out Petroglyph National Monument. When we were at White Sands, which is also a National Monument, we asked the difference between a Park and a Monument. It is a Monument when it is decreed by the President and a Park when it is decreed by Congress. There you have it. Then she said, it demonstrates how efficient our congress is, there are far more Monuments than Parks. Mmmm, oh the US Congress, a bastion of inefficiency.
We went to the hike after lunch, because it was a little chilly in the morning. We went to the Visitor’s Centre first and found out where to go for our hike. We had to drive a KM down the road to get to the Canyon that we were hiking. There are quite a few hikes, but only certain ones we can take Kizmet on. This hike was 4 miles and there are about 500 petroglyphs that can be seen from the hike.

We had to stay behind the barriers, you cannot get up close and personal with the petroglyphs. Some of them are extremely old, so they would like them preserved as well as possible. Most are carved by the Pueblo People that have lived in this area during the 1300’s. They built adobe houses along the Rio Grande, but would travel to these volcanic rocks and carve these images. Volcanic rock had special meaning for the Pueblo people. There are also some carvings by the Spanish during the 1600’s, but these tend to be more religious, mostly crosses.

We had a good hike, it was nice. When we left, we were told it was an undeveloped trail. I was expecting a goat trail, but it was a nice groomed trail. I guess undeveloped means, not paved.
We then drove around Historic Albuquerque to see what it was all about. They have a nice square, with some shops and restaurants and a couple of museums for us to check out. We then headed back to the RV to have some supper.
After supper we watched the Academy Awards. Seriously Leo, it is time to learn what a chinook is. Why would you need to go to the South Pole, couldn’t drive 3 hours north? How much carbon was burned moving everything South? Goodness! What are you doing besides mouthing off on something, putting your 30 million (that you made on one movie) to a climate change initiative? Or too busy sailing around in your yacht and your private jet. Are they fuelled on hypocrisy? Honestly.
