Sonya’s Blog - Day 238 - February 15th - Driving to San Antonio

Another packing up day and another drive. We are off to San Antonio. We didn’t think we were going to have many problems booking campsites for the next month or so, so we didn’t book this until yesterday. As it turns out, we should have booked a little earlier. It is the annual Rodeo and Stock Show in San Antonio, which is kind of a big deal. It is like our Stampede, but Texas style. We did manage to get the last campsite at the KOA, so that was good news. It just fits our RV, but there is parking nearby for the truck. Guess we should get on booking some more sites for some of our future stops in the next month.

This is not the longest drive for us, about 4 hours. On the way past Texas City, I snapped some photos of it. They are not the greatest, as it was quite far away. You get an idea of how huge it is. All owned and operated by Marathon. They bought it from BP in 2013 for about $2.4 billion. Now it is not just the refinery that makes up Texas City, but wow it is a huge refinery.

The drive was pretty uneventful. I looked at the mapping on my phone, as we were getting closer to Houston, and managed to find a different route that took us around a major accident that had traffic backed up. That was good. It is nice that the map on my phone shows us where the traffic is heavy or stopped. It has allowed us to avoid some traffic hold ups, not all, but some.

We are staying at the KOA in San Antonio and it is only about a 15 minute walk from the rodeo and fairgrounds. They have a nice bike pathway system that goes all the way there. Blake and I took Kizmet for a walk down the path to check it out. We walked all the way to where the rodeo is being held. It is a pretty big affair and super busy. We will have to go one day to check it out.

I wanted to watch the Grammys tonight, if possible. We have cable at our site, but huge surprise, we only get one channel. They have a nice clubhouse, with a very large TV and we headed over there to watch the show. There were a few other people in the clubhouse, but they were doing their own thing and didn’t care if we watched the show. It worked out well for us, and we got to see some good performances. We also got to see some not so great performances, but that’s okay.
