Sonya’s Blog - Day 195 - January 3rd - Rainy Day

Well it started raining during the night sometime and shows no signs of stopping all day. Blake and I got out early to go do some shopping. We wanted to check out Camper’s World for some new camping chairs and also go to a couple of stores to look for a few things. We also needed to get some groceries. The kids were just getting up when we were ready to go, so we left them a list of chores and went on our way.

We managed to get some really cool chairs at Camper’s World. They will be good to carry to the beach, outside on the patio and inside when we are watching a movie. There is not enough room on the couch for all four of us, so we always have to bring in a chair. These will be comfortable for that purpose. We also got the rest of our shopping and errands done, but it all took a long time. We got back at lunch time.

Blake decided he was going to take out the kids for pizza as St. Augustine has a place that has the second best pizza in the USA (according to Trip Advisor). I didn’t want to go because I don’t like pizza, so I stayed back with Kizmet and Blake took the kids. I curled up with my book, Kiz Kiz and a cup of tea and read my book. I finished my book and it was exactly who I thought it was. It was an okay book. A lot of the book was about the social customs of the day and the stark difference between men and women as well as the classes. It was an easy way to spend the afternoon.

Blake and the kids didn’t end up going to the restaurant they wanted to. It was really busy in St. Augustine and they couldn’t find parking, plus it was just pouring by the time they got there. They ended up coming back to St. Augustine Beach and going to a restaurant there. There was a bowling alley near the restaurant so they decided to go bowling after lunch for something to do since it was going to rain all day.

When they got back Blake wanted to play a game. He chose Agricola which I had given him for Christmas last year. This is a strategy game and you have to play it properly in order to get everything you need. You each have a little farm with two family members. You need to plant crops, get animals, build onto your house as well as improve it and collect food for your family. Things have to be done in a certain order and every so often you have to “feed” your family and you need to make sure you have enough food by the time those rounds turn up. By the end of the game, the goal is to have no spare squares on your board or you lose points for that. You also get points for how large your family is, how many crops and animals you have, whether you upgraded your house, etc. It can be a frustrating game because if someone has already taken the planting crops square in a round, then you need to wait until the next round. So you cannot always do what you want to and it can mess up your game. I ended up with 28 points in the end and Blake had 29, so it was one of my better games. He expanded his family right at the end and that gave him the edge. I wanted to expand my cattle herd, but Natasha took that before I could get to it and it cost me! Ah well, that’s the way it goes. We just play the basic game still. You can also add professions and do other things which makes the game more complicated, but gives you more options. We will have to try the more advanced game one day.

After the game we had a late supper and then Blake and the kids cleaned up while they watched an episode of The Flash. I didn’t feel like starting a new book so I read a bit of my Jim Gaffigan book I was given for Christmas called Food. Gaffigan is a comedian and a lot of his comedy is based on food, which he loves to eat. He travels all over the country and this book is about the different food experiences across the country. We find him very funny. The book is cute so far. I did not read very much, but I chuckled a few times.
