Sonya’s Blog - Day 198 - January 6th - Hobe Sound Beach

Today we had a 100% chance of rain for most of the day and 90% chance for the rest, or something like that. Based on the forecast we thought it was going to pour rain all day. We had decided to stay in the RV today. Blake wanted to start getting in contact with work associates and sending out his resume in the hopes of getting work when we return to Calgary. He is on a leave from Husky, but a job upon his return is not guaranteed. This is very stressful to me, given the climate in the oil patch right now. Blake thinks there will be work for him, the question is whether it will be in Calgary or not. We are, of course, willing to move to where the work is. We have moved around for his various jobs quite a bit in the past, so it will not be a problem for us to move again. Natasha and Isaac are not so fond of this idea, but we may have no other choice. Time will tell. The kids got to work on catching up on their blogs and on schoolwork. I got to work on cleaning up and doing laundry.

The rain did not go on all day, however, and we were able to get out after lunch. The skies had cleared up, but it looked like more clouds were rolling in. We decided to take advantage of the break and head to the beach, which is about 4 KM’s away.

The road heading up to the beach was beautiful, tree lined with the trees making a canopy overhead. We saw they had a bike/walking path on the road, so we will probably bike down there one day. The problem with biking is we can’t take Kizmet:(

There was a nice big parking lot and we all hopped out and headed to the beach. There was a small area of the beach that had a life guard post and we could not stay on that part of the beach with Kizmet. She was allowed on all the other parts of the beach. We just wanted to walk along the beach, so that worked out well for us. The sand here is not nearly as nice as some of the other beaches we have been to, but it was still great to walk along. The sand is much softer on this beach, not as packed down. Makes you work a little bit harder on your walk when your feet dig into the sand with every step. Good for the legs. We got away from the small crowd of beach goers pretty quickly and then let Kizmet off to chase her ball. It was a lovely walk and it was nice to get in some sunshine today. Who can complain when you have a whole beach to yourselves, amazing. Those birds over our heads in the picture are Pelicans, they always seem to fly in a straight line.

After the beach we stopped at the grocery store and then headed back to the RV. It was still nice out, so Isaac set up the outside table and started doing some science experiments with a science kit he has. Blake helped him with that, while I started some more laundry. Natasha was also working on science, she had both computers and had commandeered the inside table. After about an hour, the wind started to pick up and the rain started again.

I started on a new book, since it wasn’t time for supper yet and it was just raining out. I am reading another Anita Shreve book called Body Surfing. It is interesting because she uses the same cabin in New Hampshire that she used in the Pilot’s Wife (which I read a few months ago). She even makes references to that family that used to live there.

I finally tore myself away from my book to start supper. Isaac was starting to get louder and needing more attention, which usually means he is hungry. I started the corn on the cob and cooked up some mushrooms with onion and garlic. Blake started on the steaks outside. He and Isaac had stayed outside because we had the awning out and the rain wasn’t so bad. I then made a Caprese Salad to round out the meal. It was all very tasty.

Blake and the kids cleaned up and watched an episode of The Flash. I hid in my room and read the rest of my book. It was pretty good. I didn’t think it was as good as The Pilot’s Wife, but still interesting. She always has interesting characters, but not necessarily happy ones.
