Sonya’s Blog - Day 219 - January 27th - Exploring Carrabelle Beach and St. George’s Island
There was a chance of rain today, but it turned out to be a beautiful and hot day. Carrabelle Beach is right across the road from our campground and Blake and took Kizmet there for her morning walk. It is a lovely beach and Kizmet had lots of fun chasing her stick.

Turn around and here is the path to the beach:

There is not a lot to do in this area. Blake and I spent the morning working with the kids on their school work and also writing up the kids report cards which are due this week. We also decided that we were going to head up to Memphis, Tennessee as this is our last opportunity. Memphis is actually much closer to St. Louis, but we were not able to fit it into our itinerary when we were in St. Louis. Memphis is a 9 hour drive from Carrabelle Beach. This is too long of a road trip for us so we will stop in Birmingham, Alabama for two nights on our way to Memphis. Blake looked up things to do in Birmingham and was all excited about the Cadbury Chocolate Factory until I pointed out that Cadbury was an English company and that was probably Birmingham, England. Indeed it was and Blake remembered to put in Alabama on his next search. There is a large Civil Rights Museum in Birmingham, which we plan to visit. In Memphis we will stay at the Graceland Campground, which is right across the street from Graceland. After Memphis, we will head south to New Orleans. Look at us being spontaneous!
After lunch and the kids had accomplished their school work goals, we headed out to St. George’s Island. There was a long bridge out to the Island, so we thought we would check it out. It is a pretty sleepy little Island, but it has beautiful beaches. We found parking beside the lighthouse and got out to walk along the beach. Kizmet met lots of friends and we had a chat with two ladies that lived on the Island. We asked them if they are more concerned about hurricanes, given that they are on the Island. The lady told us that they rarely evacuate, they just hunker down and have hurricane parties. I guess it depends on what you are used to! She couldn’t understand how we could survive with the snow and the cold, so there you have it.

We had a nice long walk on the beach and enjoyed the sunshine. Isaac had a couple of races with Kizmet, he is getting pretty fast. On our way home we stopped at a grocery store in the town we went through (no really sure what the town was called), very small town though. They recommended we get our fish from the local fish shack, so we headed over there. They were set up right on the water and had a small bar where they would serve food - mostly oysters. Blake bought Natasha and I shrimp and they offered to steam them up with garlic and butter for another $2 - hell yeah. Blake also bought some fresh snapper for supper and while he was cooking that Natasha and I munched on the shrimp. Blake had one, but had a reaction to it right away. Isaac doesn’t like shrimp, so all the more for Tash and I. They were really good, but messy as we had to peel them. Blake pan fried the snapper and it was super flaky and tasty as well. Awesome!
After supper, I continued to work on the kids report cards while Blake and Natasha did the dishes and Isaac made some popcorn. We decided to watch Hitch. It was pretty funny and we all had fun watching it.
