Sonya’s Blog - Day 206 - January 14th - Another rainy day - Grrr!
We did not pick the best week to be in the Florida Keys. It is just socked in and there is a lot of rain. It is really warm out, but you get wet being out there which isn’t very pleasant. When I walked Kizmet in the dog run there were a couple of other people in the dog run. The one guy said they have been here for one month and only about 5 of those days have been sunny. What can you do, this is what it does in the winter in Florida. We have been pretty lucky so far and it is not snow, so there you have it.
Natasha was super depressed this morning when she found out Alan Rickman died. First Bowie and now Rickman and they were both the same age. A little bit of a depressing week.
Just a school work day and goofing around. We did go out in the afternoon to look around Marathon and get some groceries. The grocery store was packed, probably because everyone was sick of being stuck inside and wanted something to do. There are no malls or anything in Marathon. There are some shops, but mostly beachwear and stuff like that. We looked around for something neat, but not too much. I guess Key West has some neat shops and we are going to head there on Saturday as it is the only sunny day in the forecast.
We drove around Marathon and they had a lovely beach area on the Atlantic side that dogs are allowed at. If is ever stops raining, that is a good option for us. We got our groceries and then drove through the rest of Marathon. We saw the Turtle Hospital, they even have an ambulance. I was not quick enough with my phone to get a picture of it. We then realized we were getting to the end of Marathon, but not quick enough. We ended up on the 7-Mile Bridge and then had to drive the whole thing in order to turn around. Here is a picture:
The bridge next to it is a pedestrian bridge. It was originally known as the Knights Key-Pigeon Key-Moser Channel-Pacet Channel Bridge and was constructed between 1909 and 1912 under the direction of Henry Flagler (he just keeps coming up everywhere we go). This was part of his dream to bring the railroad to Key West, which he accomplished before his death. It is now a pedestrian bridge, but you cannot walk the whole thing as large sections of it are missing. This extension of Florida’s East Coast Railroad was also known as the Overseas Railroad. This railroad was damaged in the Labour Day Hurricane of 1935 and was then sold to the United States Government. They refurbished the bridge for automobile use. The bridge was open to motorized traffic until 2008, but now is only open for pedestrian traffic.
We were on the Seven Mile Bridge, which is the most famous bridge in the Florida Keys. The highway going all through the keys is the US1, but is called the Overseas Highway. This bridge was opened on May 24th, 1982. It has been featured in a number of films, including True Lies.
We drove the bridge both ways and it was nice. We were not being chased by Arnold in a helicopter and the air force didn’t blow up the bridge, but it was pleasant.
We headed back to the RV and I started to prep supper. We were having rice with coleslaw and port chops. I needed to make the coleslaw, which is a lot of prep. I got to work and then Blake grilled the pork chops when I was almost done.
We decided to watch a movie that Alan Rickman was in. We have seen all the Harry Potter movies more than once, but he is a great Snape. We decided on Die Hard because he is supposed to play a great villain in that one and we have that movie on our hard drive. Only Blake has seen Die Hard, but he loves it. Alan Rickman was a good villain, so cocky.
