Sonya’s Blog - Day 169 - December 8th - Hanging out on Surfside Beach

So I guess we are not, technically, on Myrtle Beach. The city of Myrtle Beach is about a 20 minute drive from us, but this whole area is part of the Grand Strand which is a 60 mile string of beaches. The Grand Strand stretches from Little River to Georgetown and Myrtle Beach is the main hub. Now the population of Myrtle Beach is only about 30, 000 and North Myrtle Beach is about 15, 000 or so, but this area attracts over 10 million visitors per year. I guess this would explain how all the shops, restaurants and attractions can stay in business. There is not a ton to do around here unless you want to shop, golf or go to a restaurant. There are a few touristy things, like amusement parks, a wax museum and quite a few theatres. The main attraction is the beach and it is a lovely beach.

We hung around in the morning and the kids did school work. I mostly read my book while this was going on. It was lovely outside, so I got to read outside and listen to the ocean. I still don’t really like Pillars of the Earth, but I am determined to finish it. There is lots of repetition about the main characters lives (a retelling of their lives up to that point in the book) and I am just skipping over these parts. I mean, I just read that about a hundred pages ago and I certainly don’t need a summary of it. There are a lot of scenes about raping and pillaging after battles and I am really not too interested in that. I know it happened and it was a rough life in the 1100’s in England, but I don’t need the coarse and vulgar details. I also feel like he is taking a really long time to tell the story and I am getting a little bored of it, especially some of the characters. I am sure it will end exactly how I think it will, as the story seems to be heading that way. I still have hundreds of pages till I get there, so he probably could have wrapped it up a lot quicker.

We went to the beach after lunch, when the day was at its warmest. It was about 16 degrees today and a little bit windy. It was nice on the beach and Kizmet was having a great time with her frisbee. I had to brave the waters to rescue her frisbee as she couldn’t find it in the waves. It was really hard to see, but I finally got it out. The water was much warmer than I expected it to be. She also likes to play with the shells on the beach. Isaac was digging a village in the sand. At one point he looked like he was just having a nap in the sand, but he insisted that he was busy working. I don’t love to just sit on the beach, but I do love to walk on the beach. Blake and I grabbed the dog and went for a stroll. We could have her off leash almost all the time, we just leashed her when we were passing people. It was a lovely walk.

We headed back to the RV after our walk. Blake and Isaac decided to head over to the pool and the arcade to have a little fun. Natasha continued to work on her timeline for her Social Studies project. I continued on with my book, it’s a bit of a slog.

We had supper and then got everything set up and cozy to watch Elf. We watch Elf every year and it is now our Christmas Tradition. It’s funny every time, Will Ferrell plays the innocent really well. We all laughed.
