Sonya’s Blog - Day 157 - November 26th - American Thanksgiving
Today is American Thanksgiving, so it is a holiday here. As a bonus the fighter jets are quiet today as everyone is celebrating. We bought some turkey breasts, collard greens, sweet potato, cranberries, stuff to make stuffing and cornbread. I am pretty sure we will have more than enough for the four of us.
Blake and Isaac got to work on the collard greens in the morning. The lady at the vegetable stand told us to cook them overnight in the crockpot with hog jowls, but I didn’t get any of those. We will just cook them in the crockpot and hope for the best. Here is a picture of them:

I started on the stuffing and Natasha took care of the sweet potatoes.
When everything was prepped and ready to go, we decided to go to Virginia Beach and check it out. The beach is massive and there is a boardwalk that goes along the edge of it. The boardwalk is not open past 5 PM to walk on because they are currently holding the Festival of Lights and they allow people to drive on the boardwalk for this. We will check it out when Suzanne and the kids get here tomorrow, they are joining us for 4 or 5 nights.

We walked right down to the beach because dogs are allowed on it and it wasn’t very busy so we wanted to throw the frisbee for Kizmet. The water is quite cool, I put my toes in. It is a beautiful day though, so nice and warm for walking on the beach (21 degrees today). We walked the beach for a bit and then I went off on my own for a little break. There was a breakwater a little ways down the beach, so I went to check it out. There were quite a few surfers down that way, so that was a bit of a surprise. I tried to get a picture, but they are all wearing black wetsuits and they blend in with the water too much, so they don’t show up on the camera at all. I saw quite a few of them get up and surf, one guy was really good and rode his wave for quite awhile. Pretty cool. I also saw this turkey that someone had carved out of the sand:

There were lots of Happy Thanksgiving messages on the beach, but I liked the turkey the best. I turned around and went to find the rest of my family, but didn’t have much luck. I searched for about 1/2 hour and then returned to the truck, which is where they were. I tried to text Blake, but he had forgotten his phone. Ah well, we found each other in the end and returned to the RV to start on supper.
The turkey breast was much larger than I had thought as it was bone-in and they had done it up so it had a cavity to stuff. I had a hard time fitting it in my little oven, but I finally managed after trying to lie it every which way in my tiny pan. I stuffed the cavity and hoped for the best. It took a little longer than expected (because it was so big) and we had a nice meal:

The kids and Blake watched a show while they cleaned up and I started on a new book: The Mineral Palace. It takes place during the Depression in Colorado. So far it is okay, but not gripping.
