Sonya’s Blog - Day 154 - November 23rd - Moving to Virginia Beach

So we have been on the road for 5 months now, which is amazing. Moving days have not gotten any easier and they are kind of exhausting. I don’t love them and I am not the best person I could be on moving days. I find them stressful and everything needs to be secured properly or we end up with a big mess when we set up. A lot of stuff needs to be moved as well, because we need to bring in all the slides. If you forget to move stuff, then it will get wrecked or we could wreck the slide.

Another problem with moving day is our GPS which loves to take us on wacky routes sometimes. We bought a large road map that shows us the best routes for towing on, since we have gotten into some trouble with low bridges. We mapped out a route on my phone and compared it to the route that the GPS in our truck wanted to take us on, then compared it to the map. Everything looked fine, until a little ways into our drive Blake starts turning off the 495 onto a smaller interstate. I don’t know how we missed this, little detour that the GPS had in it’s system, but we did. This was not good and made no sense since we had to hook up with the 495 again. The 495 is the main trucking route, therefore all the bridges are high. We had to turn around and get back on the 495, because not trucks were allowed on this other interstate, which usually means low bridges. The other problem was that this road was far more congested and slower and just a huge waste of time. I was not impressed.

Isaac and Kizmet at one of the rest stops:

We finally got turned around and I turned off the GPS and used my phone instead. It is far easier to change routes on my phone then it is on the GPS in the truck. I could keep us on the major roadways, until our final turn to get to the campground.

We were passed by this Delorian during our drive. I wasn't fast enough to get a picture when it was beside us:

After that everything went very smoothly and, for the first time in a long time, we had no toll roads. We didn’t love the site that they had chosen for us, but since there are not very many campers we could choose another one. They do have lots of campers coming this weekend, for the Thanksgiving long weekend, but there were still a lot of sites to choose from. We found one that was quite level and set up. While we were setting up, several army fighter jets flew over us. They are very noisy and were clearly landing not far from us. I looked at my map and sure enough there is a large Naval Air Station not far from where we are camping. Hopefully, they will not be taking off and landing all night because it would be hard to sleep through.

Unfortunately, we need to pack up everything again tomorrow morning because we have the trailer in for service to fix our faulty valves. Good times.
