Sonya's Blog - Day 149 - November 18th - Hanging Out at Camp

Today we took a day off and played around the campsite and did some chores. I wanted to read my book, so in between laundry I did just that. I am reading Uprooted by Naomi Novik. I had started it a few days ago and was only 7 or 10 chapters in. So far it is very good and easy to read so I had every confidence I could finish it today.

Nothing really happened today, except I finished my book. This is a fantasy book set in a different world than our own. There is a Sorcerer, called The Dragon, who watches over the valley because The Wood nearby is dangerous and sometimes creepy things come out of it and wreak havoc. The Sorcerer is there to deal with these things. Every ten years there is a choosing ceremony where he will take a girl from one of the villages and she has to go live with him for ten years. The book opens with a Choosing Ceremony about to happen. It was an okay book, it kept me interested and I read through to the end. Some of the characters were hard to get a read on. The Dragon isn't very nice and doesn't explain anything, so the first half of the book is just floundering through with the main character and the reader trying to figure out what is going on. The Wood was really good, with lots of mystery and intrigue. Overall, I liked the book and the fairytale feeling that the book had. Some of the plot developments took me by surprise, but that’s okay. Some of the names are hard to pronounce and she clears up how to say the main characters name at the end. Her name is Agnieszka - which is pronounce Ag-nyesh-kah. The author takes a lot of inspiration from Polish stories and fairytales that were read to her when she was young.
