Sonya's Blog - Day 148 - November 17th - More Big Bus Tour and Sherlock Holmes at the Warner Theatre

We headed out about noon to go into Washington. We didn't want to carry much today because we were going to the theatre tonight, so we decided we would just eat out. We pretty much had to eat lunch right when we got downtown because we didn't have our act together to have it before we left. We found a nice little cafe and had a great meal. We then found the bus stop for the yellow line tour, which is the tour we wanted to do today. This was the one that we were supposed to take to get the best views of the White House. Well it wasn't a very good view and we were nowhere near the White House. The bus doesn't go around the White House at all, really. I guess we will have to walk it to see it properly.

We went through Dupont Circle, which was a nice little area. We also went through Georgetown, which we really liked. This is the oldest neighbourhood in DC. This was not a very long tour and it was just a pre-recorded tour. They were neat little neighbourhoods and everything, but nothing to really talk about.

Once we were done the tour we decided to go to the Wax Museum. It was still warm today, but the wind was quite cold and we were all chilly from sitting on the top of the bus. It was a short walk to the museum and we were there in no time. This is a very small Madame Tussauds. The biggest section is the Hall of Presidents and they have a wax figure for every single one. The kids got pictures with Lincoln and a couple of others. I wanted my picture with Obama and I also got my picture at the Oval desk and at the press podium with my Secret Service buddy right beside me. They had some stars as well. The kids got their picture with Michael Jackson, but I chose The Rock. Blake and I also got our pictures with Stephen Colbert since we are such big fans and I also got one with Jimmy Fallon. There were a few sports stars, as well and then that was it. We were done in about an hour.

We decided to walk and find a restaurant for an early dinner since the show was at 7. We found a restaurant nearby that looked promising so we headed off in that direction. We passed the Ford Theatre on our way so we popped in there to ask about tours. Tours are free, but we need to be there in the morning. They usually hand out tickets with your time, but they are not very busy right now so we will probably be able to go straight in on the day we show up. Perfect. Two blocks later we were at our restaurant.

We all had a good meal and then headed to the Warner Theatre. This theatre was built in the 1920's and is an historic venue. We were seeing Sherlock Holmes starring David Arquette at the historic Warner Theatre. The doors opened at 6:30 and we got there not long after that. We were far too early, as it turns out, because the show was not until 7:30 (we thought it was at 7). We checked out the theatre, but it was quite small so that didn't take long. We then headed to the basement and found some chairs where we waited until they opened up the theatre. We had to be patted down upon entering the theatre, which was a new thing. This was implemented due to the Paris attacks and the threats that have been made towards Washington. They finally opened up the theatre and we found our seats. They were 10 minutes late starting the show. Well right away you knew it was going to be a quirky take on Sherlock Holmes. I immediately disliked Arquette's portrayal of him, he was too goofy and didn't deliver his lines well. They almost seemed to making fun of it, but then sometimes they were serious. It was very mish mashy and not well done at all. The story was hard to follow and it was sometimes difficult to hear the lines. Furthermore, Arquette flubbed his lines more than once. Many people left at the intermission, which isn't a good sign. Some people really were enjoying it and both the kids liked it. I thought it was poorly done.

We got home very late. Kizmet had been well taken care of and the dog walker had left me notes detailing what had happened during her walks. We took her out for another long stroll and everyone got ready for bed and called it a night.
