Sonya’s Blog - Day 146 - November 15th - The Smithsonian Museum of Natural History

It was very cold last night, I had to get up and turn on the heat because it was just too cold for me to sleep. There was frost on the ground this morning. Blake went for a run with Kizmet and he found it a bit chilly.

Natasha worked on posting her blogs while she had breakfast and she pointed out to me that she has found some errors in my blogs, but she corrected them. So I guess I now have an editor for my blogs. This is probably a good thing, because sometimes I am really tired when I write them and I post them before reading them over again.

We are heading back into Washington today. We are going to the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. Blake made breakfast, while Natasha and I got lunches together. Isaac was on dishes duty. It gets pretty tight in our little kitchen when everyone is in it. We finally got everything together and headed out the door. The trains run about every 15 minutes on Sunday and one was waiting at the platform when we got there, so we had perfect timing. By the time we got into Washington it had warmed up a lot and I was sad I had brought my jacket, because now I have to carry it around with me all day.

This is another one of the larger museums that the Smithsonian has. We started out in the Ocean Gallery. They had many specimens of fish and sea creatures that I had never seen before. We moved onto the Mammal Gallery, but we had lost Natasha by this time. She likes to wander off and do her own thing, the only problem with this is we had not planned where to meet up. As luck would have it, we ran into her as we were heading to go for lunch.

After lunch we all went to the top floor. The kids wanted to go off on their own, so we picked a meeting place and went our separate ways. Blake and I headed into a gallery that has a whole bunch of photos from Africa from a photo journalist who works for National Geographic. There were some amazing photos in there and a little blurb about each one. It was interesting to read about what the photographer endured in order to capture some of the shots. After that we went through a gallery that had award winning photographs in it. Those were really amazing as well. We quickly went through a couple of other galleries on our way back to meet the kids. The kids had one more thing to find for their Scavenger Hunt, so we went on the look for that. This took us through the dinosaur exhibits. They needed to find a nest with dinosaur eggs.

When we were done that we headed downstairs. The kids wanted to check out the museum store and then we started to walk back to the train. We had great timing again and our train arrived about 2 minutes after we got on the platform.

We were back by 5 and we all had our jobs to do. I took Kizmet out for a long walk and run. Isaac started to prepare lunches for tomorrow and Blake and Natasha cooked supper. When I got back, I took the recycling out and then took care of the laundry that I had put on before we left. We had steak, potatoes and asparagus for supper and then we headed over to the hot tub for a soak. The hot tub is really hot, so we cannot stay in it for long. It was a nice relaxing way to wind down. Blake and the kids watched an episode of The Flash afterwards and then it was time for bed.
