Sonya’s Blog - Day 126 - October 26th - MoMA

It is our last day to tour around New York City. We caught the 8 AM train from our regular stop. Traveling to Sufferin didn’t really work out for Blake yesterday and it is easier to just make sure we catch the train from Otisville. Natasha really wants to visit the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) because it has Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” which is her “absolute FAVOURITE painting, like of all time Moooom!” Well then, off we go.

I thought it would be good to walk to MoMA, because it was only a 20 minute walk and it would allow us to see a couple of things that I wanted to see, like the New York Public Library and Grand Central Station. So off we wandered once we left Penn Station. We decided to get off of 7th Avenue right way. It is the street that Times Square is on and it is super jam packed all the time. The other drawback is that all the hawkers are on this street and they are constantly shoving pamphlets at you, well that gets old fast and we were done with it. We walked up to 6th Avenue (Avenue of the Americas) and that was far nicer to walk along. We turned at W42nd Street and walked through Bryant Park. This is not a large park, so it didn’t take long. The Public Library is right behind Bryant Park so we headed over there to check it out. There is a lot of marble at the Library. The stairs leading up, the flooring and walls inside. It was pretty fancy. We had a look around and checked out their small gift store. They had some really fun books and little things. Natasha loved that store. She bought a book’s I have read journal and the front cover looks like the old check-out cards that used to be in the back of library books. Then the lady stamped the front with the official New York Public Library stamp.

When we were done at the library we walked over to Grand Central Station, which was only a few minutes away. It is very big and grand.

We then walked to the Rockafeller Centre to have a look at that. They had it all decorated for Fall and the skating rink was open. Isaac was pretty excited about the Lego Store, so he popped in there.

We walked by Radio City Music Hall on our way to MoMA, but it wasn’t open for us to go in. We finally arrived at MoMA and got in line. It was amazing at how busy it was for a Monday. We went straight up to the floor that had Starry Night on it first, this was in the Post-Impressionist room. There was quite a crowd around it, but we were able to get a good viewing spot and gaze upon the mastery. It is a wonderful painting.

We were on the art and sculptures floor, so as we moved through the rooms we moved through time and the different art movements from post-impressionist to modern day. Of all the room, post-impressionist was my favourite. I cannot say I am a huge fan of a lot of modern art. They did have a lot of Picasso’s, but I don’t love the cubist movement. They are interesting and you can see the difficulty of doing the painting, but still not my favourite. Certainly much more difficult than some of the more modern painting that were splattered painted or bold strips of colour across the canvass, well to my untrained eye. It was an interesting museum and Natasha was super happy that she got to see Starry Night.

We headed out and decided to round up some lunch and decided on some street food. We went to the Halal guys and got some halal food. They were very popular and the carts were very lined up. We waited in line and then picked a spot in the sun to eat our food. It was very tasty and a good price, so that was good. I like this picture of Blake waiting for our food, he is completely dwarfed by the guy behind him and the guy taking the orders:

We didn’t have much to do after that. Natasha wanted to check out some souvenir shops, so as we were wandering back to Penn Station the kids popped into quite a few. We also saw this billboard on the way back, we watched it for about a couple of minutes. The money is going pretty fast, what a debt. We caught the 4 PM train back to our station and were back at camp in time for supper. We didn’t do much after supper and tomorrow we are just cleaning up to get ready to move on Wednesday.
