Sonya's Blog - Day 121 - October 21st - Traveling to New York
We are heading to Deerpark, New York, which is the closest campground we could find to New York City. There is a parking lot type campground in New York City, but that means driving in the city. I have been to New York once and I know we do not want to be towing a trailer through those streets, they are narrow and crazy busy. We do have a hell of a commute to get into the city though, 2 hours by train. There is a train station about 15 minutes from the campground, which is super convenient, but still takes a long time.
We got all packed up and were on the road by 10:30. It was a 4 1/2 hour drive to our campground, so we were just moving and setting up today. We were far enough north of any larger cities that we were not too concerned about hitting any rush hour traffic or anything.
We ended up driving right through Hartford, Connecticut and it was a tad busy there. Not long after that we hit some construction and the traffic was backed up a very long ways and not moving at all. I got on my GPS and saw that there was a secondary road that paralleled the highway, so we tried that. It was a much prettier road and it didn't have any low bridges, which is always a concern when we are towing. Furthermore, it had a gas station with diesel on it and it allowed us to fill up. So we went around the traffic, got some gas and then came back out on the freeway and everything was moving when we came back on. After that we didn't have any incidents.

We found our campground without a problem and got all checked in. It is a very large campground, but most of it is empty now. We have our section all to ourselves and it is very pretty with all the trees and falling leaves (which we don't have to rake). Set up was not too much of a hassle and once we were all set up we started to plan our time in New York. We had talked to the front desk about nearby dog sitters, because we are going to need one for when we are in New York. She told us that the lady that does the housekeeping will do dog sitting and she is onsite. Perfect! We got that all arranged and Kizmet will be well taken care of while we are in New York.

We looked at all our options for New York, they have several passes and deals to be had. I wanted to make sure we had it worked out before we arrived in the city. We decided that The Explorer Pass made the most sense for us. We could buy for 3, 5, 7 or 10 activities that we wanted to do and there are 54 attractions to choose from. This was the only one that included the bus tours, so it worked for us. We bought the 5 pass, which also gives us a cruise and two museums on top of the 5 attractions. Good enough deal for us, I doubt we will be able to do everything, but we only need to do about 3 and then the pass pays for itself.
We have to be at the train station for 8:02 AM tomorrow, so we will have to be up early.
