Sonya’s Blog - Day 55 - August 16th - Le Musee de L’Histoire de Canadien

Off we went to the Canadian Museum of History today. It is a very large museum and is located in Gatineau. Natasha wanted to check it out as they had a special exhibition on Ancient Greece with artifacts that are in North America for the first time. It is a very large museum so we gave ourselves lots of time to tour it. We had also bought tickets for the IMAX movie, which was on Greece.

The Ancient Greece Exhibit was very good. It went through the various stages of Ancient Greece up until Alexander the Great. They had it set up in sections according to each timeline and what was happening in the area at the time. They had many artifacts, some from 3500 BCE, The Minoans, and it was amazing how great of shape the artifacts were in. We learned lots of great stuff. We then stopped for lunch and had about an hour until our IMAX show so we went and toured the Terry Fox exhibit. They had the van that Terry travled in and interviews with Terry. They had some of the t-shirts he wore and his prosthetics. It covered Terry’s determination and decision to do the run across Canada. They also had lots of the letters that he received and gifts that people sent him during his run and especially after he got sick again and he had to stop his run. If you had written to Terry, they had a full database of all the letters and you could try and find yours. It was a very good exhibit.

We then headed off to the IMAX theatre to learn more about Greece. It followed an archaeologist and discussed some of his finds and what they tell us about the Ancient Greeks. It was pretty good. We then did a quick tour of the First Nations exhibit and then called it a day.

We headed back to the RV after a quick stop at the grocery store and prepped up some Cobb Salad. After supper Blake, Isaac and I had a came of Bocce Ball. The first game we played in the lawn bowling area, which was graveled. The balls rolled like crazy. I was leading, but then Isaac hit his stride and took the game. The next game we played on the grass and Blake dominated that game. After that I did some prep in the RV and Blake did some outside so we would have less to do in the morning.

I decided to read my book until I was ready for bed. I finally started Brain of Fire by Susannah Cahalan. It is her memoir of about a year in her life when she suffered from unexplained psychosis which came on quite suddenly. I almost finished it, but it got too late and I couldn’t get it done. It is good, a little scary at how quickly she went from being a fully functioning 24 year old adult to completely crazy, incomprehensible and dependent and how long it took the medical community to figure out what was going on.

We drive to Montreal tomorrow.
