Sonya’s Blog - Day 48 - August 9th - Hanging out at the campsite

We were supposed to go into Toronto today because Natasha was all excited about it, however she doesn’t like to get out of bed. She had told us that she would start setting her alarm and this morning we thought we would just wait to see when she actually would get up. It was about 10, and then it was too late to go into Toronto. Blake wanted to go see the Hamilton football game which started at 5 PM. By the time the kids were ready to go it would probably be almost noon and it takes at least 45 minutes to get downtown. With the ride back and then the trip to Hamilton, we would really just spend our whole day traveling and not a lot of time doing. Maybe they learned their lesson about getting up, but I doubt it.

Our set-up at the campsite:

I was fine with it, I am kind of exhausted from all our touring around and was happy for the break. There is always stuff to be done around the RV and Isaac wants me to read The Scorch Trial by James Dashner. It is the second book in The Maze Runner series. The first book was okay, but I am not dying to find out what happens to the characters. I guess I would have read the book by now if I was. However, Isaac has read the whole series, one of the first for him to plough through, and he wants me to read it so that we can all see the movie when it is released in September. My rule is you cannot see the movie unless you have read the book and Isaac is applying that to me. It is not a big deal, it will take me a few hours at most and it will be and easy read.

So we just puttered around and did our own thing. I gave Isaac some typing lessons as he doesn’t type properly and really needs to learn the keyboard. There are some online apps, but I wanted to start with the basics, like home position. I also wanted to watch him type to make sure he is using the right fingers and not going back to 2 fingers. He did really well and complained a lot less than I thought he would and started having fun with it. We will do some lessons everyday until we have covered the whole keyboard and then he can start with an app or online lessons. He wants to type up this book report that he has written for The Death Cure by James Dashner (the 3rd book in the Maze Runner series). I think he should learn how to type properly first and things will go a lot smoother in the future. After his first lesson he agrees, so we will stick with the lessons and he can type up the book report next week. He doesn’t want me to read it until I have read the book, so there you go. Perhaps I will have read the book by then.

I had also given the kids a math problem. When we were touring around Toronto the tour guide pointed out the $400 000 bathroom that the city had installed downtown, near the lake. It is a self-cleaning bathroom, hence the steep cost. You have to pay 25 cents to use it, but you get 20 minutes with nice music for your quarter. Assuming that the bathroom makes 25 cents every 20 minutes, 24/7, how many years would it take for the bathroom to pay for itself? They both took very different approaches to figuring out the answer and it was interesting to see how they broke it down. Isaac got 60 years, 321 days, 5 hours and 20 minutes. He disappeared with his ipod for a bit so I think he used it - what a brat. Natasha did hers all on paper, but hates dividing so avoided it wherever possible and got over 61 years. I got 60 years and 321 days or 60.88.

Blake bought tickets for the Hamilton game for him and the kids. I didn’t really want to go, I went to the Jays game and I was good staying behind and finishing up my book and some other things, plus Kizmet loves the company.

Blake and the kids at the game:

I finished The Scorch Trials and it was pretty much what I expected. Different things happened to the kids, but it is very similar to The Maze Runner. The books are post-apocalyptic, which is a popular theme these days. All sorts of terrible things have happened to the earth and the kids are being treated like guinea pigs and put through all sorts of weird scenarios to see how they respond so that the creators of said experiments can find a cure for the terrible disease that is affecting the human race. It will all be wrapped up in The Death Cure when I get around to reading that.

I guess that is it for me today,

Sonya
